Laboratories

The Radiochemistry Fuel Cycle Summer School has three graded laboratories. The students are divided into three teams. Each team will perform the laboratory and provide a single write up for each laboratory. The grade for each laboratory will be shared amongst the team members. The laboratories will be performed 11-13 June 2014.

  1. Group A successfully completed the Alpha & Gamma Spectroscopy Laboratory today. It was my first time working with an Alpha Spectrometer and HPGe detector. Looking forward to figuring out the unknowns. Lets keep up the good work, go Group A and the groups as well!

  3. My only lab experiences have been highly structured in the past (General chemistry and physics labs) and largely based around demonstrating basic concepts without referencing their practical applications.

I'm glad to say that these past couple of labs (ZrO2 pellet synthesis and alpha/gamma spectroscopy) have broken that trend completely. I think my favorite so far is the alpha gamma spectroscopy lab because of it's analytical approach.

I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow's lab on Uranium extraction and the research presentations on Monday.

  4. Yes, we are not structured. We try to give some research aspect to the labs.

  5. I enjoyed the labs assigned for the most part. Alpha gamma spec was a little more difficult. Trying to identify the unknown was rough.
